Outlook

Outlook is a personal information manager from Microsoft, available as part of the Office suite. Although Outlook is mainly used as an email application, it also includes a calendar, task manager, contact manager. Outlook has a web version at: https://outlook.live.com, a stand-alone application for PC and also a mobile app for iOS and Android devices.

The current Outlook version 16 is bundled with Microsoft Office 2016, which was released in September, 2015.

1. Create a Microsoft account

  1. Go to Outlook on web. You will be asked to sign in.
  2. Click on Create one!.
  3. Provide your information as required including your full name, birthday, gender, phone number, email address (this will be used as your username to log in to Microsoft services, you can create a new one as an Outlook email by choosing Get a new email address)
  4. Click Create account when done.

2. Sign in Outlook

  1. Go to Outlook on web. You will be asked to sign in.
  2. Enter your email address or phone number.
  3. Type in your password.
  4. Click Sign in.

3. Feature

What makes Outlook such a great tool for enterprise-level collaboration is that it has all the productivity features packed into one unified application and everything can be shared, with settings for levels of permissions for each user.

A. Email

Outlook is mostly used as an email application and it is similar to all other email services. Users can use Outlook as their main email account or use it as a third-party app to manage their emails from all other services such as Gmail, Yahoo Mail..., all in one place, eliminating the needs to switch between multiple accounts. Other feature can be accessed by clicking the menu button in the top left.

B. Calendar

Outlook Calendar has a similar interface to Windows 10's Calendar app and it supports files from other calendaring services for users to import their calendar entries into Outlook. It features daily, weekly, monthly and agenda view modes. It also features a to-do list function for users to keep track of their tasks. Multiple calendars can be created and shared, allowing different levels of permissions for each user. Microsoft also added a weather forecast directly in the Calendar.

C. People

Outlook People is the contact manager component of Outlook. Contacts can be added, as well as imported from many other social media such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn... Users can also sort and put contacts into folders for easier management. For example, a folder for people from work, a folder for family, and so on. Outlook People allows users to link one person's accounts from multiple sources (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Gmail, Yahoo...) to one unified profile containing all the contact information of that person.

D. Tasks

Outlook also provides a built-in to-do list. Users can create tasks, categorizing them into folders. Outlook Tasks provides the user with fields such as subject, start and end dates, percent complete, priority, and how much work was put into each task. Rich editing features like bold, italic, underline, numbering, and bullet points were also introduced. Tasks can also be assigned to others by sending them as emails, all done within Outlook.

E. Skype integration

Skype is integrated into Outlook, users are able to access their Skype's contacts, conversations, and make calls from within Outlook without Skype's desktop client. To access, simply click on the Skype icon in the top right.
